Man Growing A Third Ear On His Arm : Get Prepared to Be Amazed
Yes, you heard it right. Stelarc is a performance artist from Australia who has acoustically amplified his body. The ear was transplanted in his arm which was made of bio-compatible material used in plastic surgery. Gradually, the tissues and the blood cells morphed with the ear and now it is a part of Stelarc's body.
He can't hear anything from the amplified ear but has planned to
develop an external earlobe where he will install a Wi-Fi enabled microphone.
Once the microphone is activated, people from across the world can hear what he
is listening to. "This ear is not for me, I've got two good ears to hear
with. So wherever you are and wherever I am in the world you'll be able to
listen in to what my ear is hearing." he said while speaking to CNN Style Magazine.
Stelarc is also a director of Alternate Anatomies Lab at Curtin University in Perth (Australia). He has been using his body for experiments since long. He's had
cameras placed inside his stomach, lungs and colon. He has also performed with
a third hand and hung himself naked from ceiling with hooks.
Coming back to his latest project, it took 10 years for Stelarc to
find Surgeons who were willing to work on it. Medical practice is all
about curing people and recovering the damage. It would be unethical from
someones part to invest time in developing a new ear for a person who is sound
and healthy.
Initially it was hard for anyone to understand the artistic
motivation behind what he was doing. Eventually, he found three European
plastic surgeons who took up his project. They are willing to continue working
and making his artistic dream come true. Even the Australian artistic community
has awarded him an Australian Council Award in March this year for outstanding achievement in Emerging and
Experimental Arts.
" It's when art is surprising that it becomes interesting." Stelarc.
