Raavan - The good side of evil
We all know Raavan as the ten headed evil who abducted Maata Sita and later was killed by Shri Ram. All we have been told, read and known about him that he was ill minded, greedy, proud and evil king of Lanka.
But the evil king had many qualities which have never have been told about. Let’s explore the good side of the evil king.
Raavan was a great possessor of knowledge. As he is called the ten headed man, he is also referred as the symbolism of great knowledge and wisdom. He had the knowledge of all four Vedas and other scriptures. He had also mastered the Shashtra gyan (knowledge of fighting combats). He could also amaze anyone with his great Veena playing skills.
Raavan was a great ruler to his kingdom. The citizens of Lanka enjoyed all the comfort of citizenship under his rule. He had acquired the great army of Sumali, a demon king after defeating him. He had also defeated his half brother Kuber to capture all his wealth and the golden Lanka which was made by the great god of architecture Shri Vishwakarma.
Raavan, although being Asur (evil), was a great devotee of Shiva. He had also impressed the Lord to grant him boon of establishing a Shivalingam in the Lanka itself but Lord Vishnu played a trick due to which he couldn’t establish it in Lanka. He had also impressed Lord Brahma to grant him boon of immortality by giving him the great nectar of Amrit which got stored in his naval.
Despite of having
the desire to marry Sita, Raavan was an extreme family man. He had immense
respect for his wife Mandodari. He used to discuss his court happenings to her.
He is also known to have loved his sister for whom he went out to kill Lakshman
which led to abduction of Sita. He also loved his sons.
Apart from all
these qualities, Raavan is respected for the fact that even after abducting
Sita, he didn’t even touch her and kept waiting for her to agree to marry him.
Raavan is called evil and is burnt every year on Dusshehra. But many of us don’t possess the above qualities which a gentleman should.
So the question here comes, who is Raavan?? An evil?? If so, then what are we??
